Chef Phil Gorny

Born and raised in Gaylord, Chef Phil built his early career at local favorites including Bennethums and the Otsego Club before heading downstate to cook at acclaimed Detroit-area restaurants such as Pumachug and Churchills Cigar Bar and Bistro.

After facing personal challenges — including the loss of his leg due to an injury — Chef Phil made the decision to return home to Gaylord, bringing with him both resilience and a renewed passion for creating food that connects people.

The new Inn the Woods menu celebrates seasonal Michigan ingredients and offers a modern spin on timeless classics, highlighting comfort, community, and the warmth of shared meals. Diners can expect thoughtfully crafted dishes that balance innovation with familiarity — a reflection of Chef Phil’s deep local roots and his journey back to where it all began.

“Coming home to Gaylord and stepping into the kitchen at Michaywé has been a dream,” said Chef Phil Gorny. “This menu is about honoring the people and flavors that shaped me — bringing the community together around good food, made with heart.”
